Project Goals: Management of property as a fish and wildlife conservation area.  The general activities are to maintain and enhance habitat values on the property through ongoing operations, maintenance, resource monitoring, and restoration/enhancement projects.

Discussion:  The project will partially mitigate fish and wildlife impacts for the John Day Dam as outlined in the Northwest Power Planning Council's (NPPC) Wildlife Program (NPPC 1994, §11.1, §7.6).  The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Department of Natural resources will manage, plan and coordinate with other natural resource cooperators.  Results of project restoration and enhancement activities will be monitored and evaluated using widely accepted scientific methods.  The project will compliment several ongoing protection and restoration efforts in the John Day Basin.

Location:  The Oxbow Conservation Area (OCA) is located approximately twenty five miles from Prairie City, Oregon, along Grant County Road 20.  It is completely surrounded by the Malheur National Forest, with the closest private lands being the Nature Conservancy's Dunston Ranch one mile downstream and the Middle Fork Forrest Conservation Area 4.2 miles upstream, which is also managed by the Tribe.  The 1,022-acre property has 10.6 miles of boundary and contains 4.1 river miles.
