Contract Description:
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (Department), Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR), and Nez Perce Tribe (NPT) are working together under the Northeast Oregon Hatcheries Project (NEOH) to restore Grande Ronde, Imnaha and Walla Walla salmon and steelhead.  The Department’s recent NEOH efforts have focused on planning and implementation of the Grande Ronde Basin Endemic Spring Chinook Supplementation Program (GRBESCSP) to support recovery of these populations as directed by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).  The GRBESCSP incorporates a number of components including setting aside the Wenaha and Minam basins as natural production reserves, supplementing Lostine, Catherine Creek and upper Grande Ronde chinook populations using captive and conventional hatchery broodstock techniques, and testing the potential to naturalize a hatchery stock to restore Chinook to Lookingglass Creek.

The purpose of this contract is to integrate Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) efforts with the Lower Snake River Compensation Plan (LSRCP) program to restore spring Chinook endemic to the Grande Ronde basin. BPA has constructed an adult holding and spawning structure at Lookingglass Hatchery.  These integrated efforts focus on holding and spawning adults, rearing juveniles, hatchery maintenance, fish health, and monitoring natural production (redd counts) for Catherine Creek, Lostine River, and Upper Grande Ronde stocks.  Transportation efforts of this contract were discontinued due to lack of funds.

In summary, fish culture and fish health efforts have produced smolts from 86.2%, 81.1% and 84.5% of the total green eggs collected from Catherine Creek (CC), Upper Grande Ronde (UGR), and Lostine River (LR), respectively.

Redd counts observed preceding supplementation efforts in Catherine Creek, Lostine River, and Upper Grande Ronde.  The Minam and Wenaha are reference streams.
