The CTWSRO Hood River Production Program staff will conduct monitoring and evaluation of the existing spring Chinook salmon supplementation program. Activities include determining pre-release smolt quality, out migration timing, duration and residualism. Adult spawning locations, timing and success will be monitored. Run size predictions, harvest recommendations and tribal harvest monitoring will be implemented during FY 10. Project staff will assist ODFW with monitoring of summer/winter steelhead supplementation activities by PIT tagging a portion of pre-release smolts and post-spawning kelts.

Funds from this project will be used to provide a BPA contract to ODFW to support M&E efforts that are essential to completion of HRPP tasks, specifically staffing fall migrant trap operation and scale reading.

FY 10 funds from this project will be used to begin the comparative hatchery release group evaluation. NOAA fisheries staff will be contracted by BPA to conduct year 1 of a 3 year smolt physiology study.

Additionally the CTWSR HRPP will plan for future M&E activities in light of the removal of Powerdale dam in 2010 and completion of the revised HRPP Master Plan. This will include: refining the M&E plan identified in the revised master plan for inclusion in an updated HGMP; PIT tagging natural origin spring Chinook  pre-smolt to determine outmigration timing and SARs.

This will be the final year of determining adult spring Chinook salmon and winter steelhear run timing past the new adult trap locations.  Radio tags will be implanted in winter steelhead during the winter 2010. University of Idaho will be contracted to provide telemetry receivers, technical assistance and complete data summary and analysis for the 2008-2010 data sets.
