Contract Description:
The Luckiamute Watershed Council (LWC), in a strong and productive partnership with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD), began floodplain revegetation on over 80 acres at the Luckiamute State Natural Area (LSNA) in late 2010. While the LWC is pleased with the progress made to date, we are eager to expand our revegetation work. The proposed work areas encompass an additional 137 acres selected on the basis of anticipated ecological benefits. This includes extensive acreage within the estimated two-year inundation zone (see Draft River Design Group inundation map included in application packet submitted in attachments) and approximately 4.6 miles of river frontage. The desired future condition is consistent with the OPRD’s LSNA Master Plan and work area boundaries are designed to minimize both unmanaged areas and edge effects. Most of the work area currently is either devoid of native woody cover or supports sparse woody vegetation characterized by low diversity and vigor. Non-native grasses, large stands of Rubus armenicus and common agricultural weeds dominate much of the ground. The project will benefit listed fish species by enhancing vegetation cover and diversity within frequently inundated floodplain areas. The reestablishment of appropriate plant communities will provide improved forage and cover for birds and other wildlife, as the majority of the proposed plants (both in species and quantity) consist of fruit bearing shrubs and small trees. In the long term, large trees established through the project will contribute shade and wood to both rivers.
