Contract Description:
In 2013-2014, the Salmon River Basin Nutrient Enhancement project will continue to collect chemical, physical, and biological data to evaluate the efficacy of artificial nutrient treatments designed to increase freshwater habitat productivity for stream-dwelling salmonids in the upper Salmon River Basin.  The project is a continuation of an initial 4 year experimental design consisting of three years of treatment (2010, 2011, and 2012), followed by 1 year of post-treatment (2013) data collections.  Specific project objectives include the quantification and assessment of: streamwater nutrient concentrations; nutrient limitation; course particulate organic matter retention; periphyton standing stock; macroinvertebrate density, biomass, and community composition; the bioenergetics of resident and anadromous fishes; leaf litter decay rates, river metabolism measures, and aquatic food web connections in treatment streams receiving nutrient additions (n=4) and control streams (n=2) that do not receive nutrient additions.  The bioenergetics assessment of stream-dwelling salmonids will be conducted by the SBT and Dr. Ernest Keeley (Idaho State University).  The autotrophic, nutrient limitation, and river metabolism measures will be conducted by the SBT and Dr. Amy Marcarelli (Michigan Technological University).  Macroinvertebrate sorting and identification, leaf pack AFDM, and stable isotope (periphyton, macroinvertebrate, and fish) sample analyses will also be conducted by Robert Wisseman (Aquatic Biology Associates, Inc.) and Dr. Bruce Finney (Idaho State University).
