Contract Description:
The purpose of the 2014 Chinook Estuary Restoration Project is to build upon previous restoration efforts to restore normative tidal connection between Baker Bay and WDFW-owned lands within the Chinook River Estuary.  In 2013, 201 acres of private agricultural land were purchased to augment existing WDFW Chinook Wildlife Area lands in close proximity to the three tide gates under the State Route 101 bridge. This key acquisition will allow tidal flux to be increased throughout the Chinook Estuary, while avoiding flooding impacts to adjacent private lands.  Fish passage and habitat quality within the Chinook Estuary will be improved by:

1) increasing tidal flux through the SR-101 culverts/tide gates, and
2) removing anthropogenic channel constrictions in remnant natural tidal channels throughout the WDFW-owned portion of the Chinook Estuary.

The goal of the project is to provide improved habitat conditions for rearing anadromous salmonid juveniles originating from both Chinook and Columbia River populations, as well as to restore adult fish passage into this area.

This is the Construction Phase that will include: removal of channel blockages in Areas A, B, and C and removal of up to 10 additional tidal channel blockage locations; filling of up to two miles of agricultural ditches; and installation of protective measures to prevent private landowner flooding. This construction phase will be limited to April 1, 2014 to November 30, 2014. This construction project, however, will require additional vegetation planting not currently included, and post-construction AEMR that will occur after November 30, 2014.  Those tasks will be added to the MOA Scoping contract scheduled to start September 1. 2014.
