Contract Description:
This contract is for Year #13 (May 1, 2021 to April 30, 2022) of the Basinwide Supplementation Evaluation (BSE) Project (2009-009-00).  This project was developed to address recommendations put forth by the Ad Hoc Supplementation Workgroup (AHSWG, 2008), namely supporting studies which monitor and evaluate supplementation and reintroduction efforts for impacted anadromous fish populations throughout the Columbia River basin. In partnership with tribal management programs, BSE project objectives often employ genetic techniques, such as genetic stock identification and pedigree reconstruction analyses, to assess individual productivity and relative reproductive success by origin or stock. The Project also funds studies concerning hatchery rearing methodologies to inform supplementation hatchery practices.

The contract for Year #13 includes the following Project Objectives:

Project Objective #1 - Provide financing for genotyping and genetic analyses of tissue samples collected from adult spring chinook salmon returning to the upper Yakima River as part of the Yakama Nation supplementation program. Data will be used to assess relative reproductive success (RRS) of hatchery-origin (HOR) versus natural-origin (NOR) fish.

Project Objective #2 - Perform individual productivity and NOR versus HOR RRS analyses of tribal chinook salmon reintroduction/supplementation program on Lookingglass Creek, OR.

Project Objective #3 - Assist in sample collection and perform genetic stock identification, productivity analyses and related assessments of tribal sockeye salmon reintroduction efforts in the Yakima River/Cle Elum River/Cle Elum Lake basin, and in the Deschutes River/Lake Billy Chinook/Metolious River/Suttle Lake basin.

Project Objective #4 - Provide financing for genotyping and analyses of tissue samples collected from both spring chinook salmon and coho salmon adults returning to the upper Warm Springs River (as part of a Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon - CTWSRO - fisheries monitoring program), as well as a proportion of out-migrating juveniles. Pedigree relationships estimated from genetic data will inform assessments of productivity (namely the effective population size), which will be compared to annual redd counts for each species.

Project Objective #5 - Assessment of factors that may influence precocious maturation amongst male, hatchery-reared spring chinook salmon juveniles as age-2 minijacks.

Project Objective #6 - Participate in regional forums pertaining to the review of hatchery practices by presenting results from Project-funded studies as appropriate.

Project Objective #7 - Prepare manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.

Project Objective #8 - Identify opportunities where support from the Project could be profitably used to finance M&E of tribal hatchery supplementation and/or reintroduction projects.
