Contract Description:
Project/contract history:

This project is a part of the Clearwater National Forest-Nez Perce Tribe Watershed Restoration Partnership.  This project started in 2002 and extended the work ongoing since 1996 in adjacent watersheds: Fishing to Legendary Bear.  Restoration follows a ridge top to ridge top approach with implementation focused on increasing aquatic habitat connectivity, decreasing resource impacts from roads, and exotic invasive plant control. The cost share on this project has been contributed by two other sources: the Clearwater National Forest and Idaho Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Funds.  The Clearwater National Forest provides an approximate 30% match including cash and in-kind.  In addition, the Nez Perce Tribe applied for and received two Idaho-Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Fund grants for 2005-2006 which provided $633,000 for implementation of road removal and culvert replacement. Our project planning, project costs, and implementation responsibilities are shared with the Clearwater National Forest.

FY 07 Contract summary:

In 2006-2007 the Clearwater National Forest will provide approximately 30% of project costs for road removal and culvert replacement.  In addition, an environmental non-profit, Wildlands CPR, maintains a volunteer based project monitoring program in this area and the in-kind value of this monitoring is about $20,000.  Wildlands CPR collects monitoring data on roads and road removal, focusing on impacts of road removal to wildlife populations and stream habitat condition.  In 2006-2007, implementation will begin on private lands (approximately 12% of the contract area) and the timber company landowner has volunteered a 30% cost-share for implementation costs.  The exact details and partnering agreements will be developed during the winter of 2007.

FY 07 implementation includes 8 miles of road decommissioning with the corresponding revegetation and erosion control, one culvert replacement, invasive weed treatment, road decommissioning and culvert replacement monitoring, an invasive weed inventory, and a comprehensive inventory of all culverts to identify fish passage barriers.
