The MFID Coe Branch irrigation dam diverts water from USFS land, and provides water to economically-vital orchards in the Hood River valley.  The concrete dam and grated intake built in 1988 results in a 4-5 ft drop, and upstream / downstream barrier to a small population (less than 300 adults) of ESA-threatened bull trout (only population on the entire Mt. Hood National Forest).  ESA-listed winter steelhead, and cutthroat trout also utilize Coe Branch.  The existing system also uses a concrete basin to separate glacial sediment from irrigation water, which when flushed violates state turbidity standards.   The dam and grated intake will be removed and replaced with a uniformly graded channel to allow both water diversion and unimpeded up and downstream fish passage.   Next, a new diversion intake channel and FCA® horizontal flat plate fish screen will be installed for downstream fish passage, and separation of sediment from irrigation water.  The new intake and FCA® screen will continually pass sediment, and comply with state water quality laws.  Total project cost is $1,642,266 and is being cost shared among 8 partners.

FY 2009 work to be performed with project funds:

BPA provided funds will be used to purchase screen materials, supplies and construction.  This includes concrete, screening material, sediment management piping, slide gates, excavation and construction activities.  Approximately 200 4-5 ft  diameter boulders gathered and stockpiled for use in cross vane construction during the stream restoration phase of this project.
