Contract Description:
The goal of this project is to determine the status of lamprey in the Deschutes sub-basin and determine limiting factors that may preclude restoring this species to historic abundance. Prior to implementation of this project basic life-history information including species composition and abundance was not known. The contract period is 10/1/2010 - 09/30/2011.  During this contract period we will:  estimate adult Pacific lamprey escapement at Sherars Falls though use of a mark-recpature methodology and tribal creel; develop a half duplex array in Shitike Creek (in conjunction with BPA project No. 2007-157-00) to monitor lamprey movement into Shitike Creek; assist with operations, maintenance and data collection at a HDX array at the mouth of the Warm Springs River (again coordinated with 2007-157-00) to monitor lamprey movements; install two redd caps to determine redd productivity; and record stream temperatures in the Deschutes River Subbasin to compare with lamprey life history.  The objectives presented in this study address "critical uncertainties" identified by the Columbia Basin Pacific Lamprey Technical Work Group (CBPLTWG) and recommended to the Columbia Basin Fish and Wildlife Authority (CBFWA).
