Contract History:

This project began in 2007 and became part of the Nez Perce Tribe Fisheries Watershed Department’s Habitat Restoration program.  In 2007 and 2008, the Nez Perce Tribe (NPT) and Nez Perce National Forest (NPNF) worked collaboratively to complete stream crossing assessments and the associated culvert replacement prioritization in the Slate Creek Watershed.  In 2009, the Nez Perce Tribe and Nez Perce National Forest worked collaboratively to implement a high priority culvert replacement on Little Slate Creek (#3246).   Another high priority crossing was replaced in 2010 (the 9315 crossing) as well as crossing #3135 in 2011.  All culvert replacement projects have had riparian planting after implementation and have undergone monitoring in accordance with our Nez Perce Tribe Culvert Replacement monitoring protocol.

This project will operate under a Partnership Agreement between the Nez Perce Tribe and the Nez Perce National Forest.  The Nez Perce National Forest contributes approximately 20% of project costs in both cash and in kind for contract preparation, administration and technical oversight.

This project has been, and is still currently a part of the Nez Perce National Forest - Nez Perce Tribe Watershed Restoration Partnership.  Since the project’s inception we have shared project planning, costs, and implementation responsibilities.

Summary of FY 2012 Contract Implementation:

FY 12 contract implementation will include the implementation of the 3136 crossing located on FS road 221 (the main Grangeville Salmon Roads) and associated riparian planting. as well as project implementation/effectiveness monitoring and evaluation of the 3135 & 3136 culvert replacements.  Additionally, a design for at least one or up to three high priority crossings will be contracted in preparation for out-year implementation.  Monitoring associated with the culvert replacements will commence according to our Nez Perce Tribe Fisheries Watershed Culvert Monitoring Protocol.
