In 2014-2015, the Salmon River Basin Nutrient Enhancement (SRBNE) project will continue to collect chemical, physical, and biological data to evaluate the efficacy of natural (i.e., spawning Chinook salmon) and artificial (i.e., Chinook salmon carcasses and carcass analogs) nutrient additions designed to increase freshwater habitat productivity for stream-dwelling salmonids in the upper Salmon River Basin.  The 2014 field season will focus on evaluations in the Yankee Fork Salmon River (YFSR) watershed.  The project is a continuation of an initial 4 year experimental design consisting of three years of treatment (2010, 2011, and 2012), followed by 1 year of post-treatment (2013) data collections.  Specific project objectives for the 2014-2015 contract period include the quantification and assessment of: streamwater nutrient concentrations; nutrient limitation; macroinvertebrate density, biomass, and community composition; river metabolism measures (gross primary production and community respiration), nitrogen and carbon stable isotope analyses (biofilm, macroinverterates, and fish); and aquatic food web connections in treatment streams receiving natural and artificial nutrient additions (n=3) and a control stream (n=1) that does not receive nutrient additions.  Experimental design issues, data collection methodology, field data collections, and data and statistical analyses of measured response variables will be planned and conducted in collaboration with other SBT projects involved in on-going habitat and fisheries related work in the YFSR watershed.  Water sample nutrient concentrations will be analyzed by Mark Palmer (High Sierra Water Lab, Inc.); macroinvertebrate sorting and identification (including abundance and biomass estimates) will be conducted by Robert Wisseman (Aquatic Biology Associates, Inc.); and nitrogen and carbon stable isotope measures will be analyzed by Dr. Bruce Finney (Idaho State University stable isotope lab).
