Contract Description:
Located in a Conservation Opportunity Area and anchor habitat of the Willamette River, Willamette Mission State Park when restored will boast the largest tract of intact, productive floodplain forest in the Willamette Valley. On acres that are hydrologically connected to the Willamette River, the project will remove invasive weeds that now dominate and inhibit natural forest regeneration and will re-establish diverse, resilient floodplain plant communities. Restoration will improve habitat complexity and water quality and reduce habitat fragmentation. Benefit will accrue to ESA listed Chinook and steelhead and a multitude of important and at-risk wildlife species, including waterfowl and migratory songbirds, owls, raptors, Western pond turtle, red legged frog, river otter, mink, beaver, bats, cougar and bobcat. Funding will primarily support site preparation  in the South Forest management unit (135 acres). Trained, certified contract crews will control invasive weeds in preparation for future native plantings not included in this contract. Requested  funds for this project  will be used for personnel, contracted services, and grant administration.
