Contract Description:
In 2016-2017, the Salmon River Basin Nutrient Enhancement (SRBNE) project will continue to collect chemical, physical, and biological data to evaluate the importance of marine-derived nutrients, primary productivity, and secondary and tertiary production to the quantity and quality of habitats supporting ESA listed fishes in the upper Salmon River Basin.  The 2016 field season will focus on evaluations in the Yankee Fork Salmon River (YFSR) watershed.  The project is a continuation of an initial 4 year experimental design consisting of three years of treatment (2010, 2011, and 2012), followed by 1 year of post-treatment (2013) data collections.  In 2014, the SRBNE project evaluated three different forms of nutrient additions in the Yankee Fork Salmon river watershed using: 1) live spawning Chinook salmon, 2) Chinook salmon carcasses, 3) SCAs, and 4) controls.  Specific project objectives for the 2016-2017 contract period include the quantification and assessment of: streamwater nutrient concentrations; nutrient limitation; macroinvertebrate density, biomass, and community composition; nitrogen and carbon stable isotope measures (biofilm and macroinvertebrates); and river metabolism measures (gross primary production and community respiration) using spatially explicit modeling techniques at the watershed scale.  Experimental design issues, data collection methodology, field data collections, and data and statistical analyses of measured response variables will be planned and conducted in collaboration with other SBT projects involved in on-going habitat and fisheries related work in the YFSR watershed.  Water sample nutrient concentrations will be analyzed by High Sierra Water Lab, Inc. and macroinvertebrate sorting and identification (including abundance and biomass estimates) will be conducted by Aquatic Biology Associates, Inc.
