Contract Description:
In 1992 the Nez Perce Tribe initiated a gene bank program with the mission of preserving the genetic diversity of Snake River basin salmon and steelhead.  Significant declines in population sizes over the previous 50 years put these populations at risk of extinction or serious loss of genetic diversity.   This program involves cryogenically preserving milt from numerous populations of anadromous salmonids.  Systematically preserving genetic resources from multiple populations of a species has numerous advantages including; 1) maximizing the genetic diversity of the collection, 2) increasing the probability of preserving undiscovered, yet unique, phenotypic traits and; 3) increasing the probability that future recovery effort, if required, will be successful.  As of August 2013, there are 2990 Chinook salmon and 1403 steelhead gamete samples in the repository.
