Contract Description:
This restoration project will take place in the Minto Island Anchor Habitat located in, and owned by, the City of Salem. Restoration activities will occur in 48 acres of floodplain adjacent to the Willamette River. The project site is part of the Minto Island Conservation Area at Minto-Brown Island Park.
The Willamette River is in need of high quality floodplain forest; the reduced amount of historic floodplain forest is identified as a limiting factor and threat for Upper Willamette River Chinook Salmon and Steelhead. This project will focus on treating invasive weeds and planting native trees and shrubs to preserve, restore, and enhance 48 acres of floodplain forest.
BPA funds are being used September 2020 - August 2021 for the treatment of invasive weeds with weed eater mowing and backpack herbicide spraying; planting large cottonwood poles by live staking in winter of 2020-2021 with installation by power augers and hand tools carried into the site; and the purchase of native plant materials for installation in the winter of 2021-2022.  The actual installation of native plants purchased with BPA funds will be completed using other secured non-BPA funding sources.
