Contract Description:
This project aims to identify and assess any and all significant passage barriers that could delay or preclude the passage of adult Pacific Lamprey. It is the logical continuation of PLCI-funded passage evaluations conducted in the lower Columbia River tributary hatchery facilities. This project will focus on all barriers, not just at hatcheries. Whether at a hatchery or around falls, fish ladders are only designed to pass adult salmonids and often preclude lamprey passage. Lamprey can't jump! The objectives include 1) identifying the top 15-20 candidate barriers that are likely limiting passage, 2) conducting physical passage assessments specific to lamprey for 15 perceived barriers, 3) recommending the best options to provide passage for each barrier identified, and 4) serve as a liaison to WDFW's Columbia Basin Restoration Initiative, lamprey passage assessment project. The liaison role will include onsite passage evaluation training, coordination, and assessment. Project deliverables will include a prioritized list of barriers, most likely limiting passage and likely increasing predation, summarized in a concise report. This work is supported by the respective RIPs, where passage is consistently identified as a significant limiting factor. Recently, passage barriers we identified by this kind of work have led to the complete removal of dams, increasing aquatic connectivity for all aquatic organisms.
