This project is designed to implement and assess steelhead kelt reconditioning in the Yakima river, with the objective of enhancing wild steelhead population abundance. Post-spawn kelt steelhead will be collected at Chandler Juvenile Collection Facility and additional research will be conducted to evaluate alternative collection sites, such as weirs and fish wheels. The collected kelts will be reared at Prosser Hatchery. After a six-month rearing period, blood samples will be obtained to measure plasma estradiol levels, which are used to assess maturation status and determine the likelihood of spawning in the subsequent cycle. Individuals exhibiting high estradiol concentrations will be released below the facility of origin by November, while those with low concentrations will be retained for an additional year of rearing prior to release.

Project evaluations will include assessments of survival rates, rematuration, and stock of origin using both empirical and genetic data. Ongoing activities will involve the preparation of manuscripts and presentations to further disseminate knowledge regarding this innovative restoration methodology.
