Contract Description:
This project will update and increase Pacific Lamprey outreach and education at one of the most visited hatcheries in Washington, Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery (LNFH). LNFH reaches nearly 100,000 visitors each year making it an ideal location to convey the value and conservation of native lampreys. Currently much of LNFH‘s content is salmon focused. This project will remedy that deficiency in two ways: updating the existing, underdeveloped lamprey display in the visitor center and installing a new Pacific-Lamprey interpretive experience on an existing trail. Improvements to the visitor center will include replacing the existing native fish aquarium with a larger one, adding larval lamprey and interpretive displays, and developing and producing outreach materials (fact sheets, coloring books, tooth art) to accompany the exhibit. The interpretive trail will feature signs and activities highlighting priority threats to Upper Columbia lampreys, including passage and small population size, as well as translocation successes in the Wenatchee River. Use counts will be conducted to estimate the number of visitors interacting with the exhibit and trail, and both a 6-month progress and final project report will be submitted documenting the implementation of this project.
