Contract Status:

Contract Description:
Project Goal:  Assess the status of anadromous salmonid populations in the Asotin Creek watershed, above George Creek.  Estimate the abundance, productivity, survival rates, and temporal and spatial distribution of steelhead/rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha).

Executive Summary:  The project is designed to enumerate adult salmonids moving into Asotin Creek to spawn and to estimate smolt emigration, including statistical estimates of bounds for population estimates.  Population data on abundance, hatchery stray rates, productivity and life history diversity will be provided.  Population status monitoring of the unsupplemented steelhead population will provide a baseline against which management actions can be assessed.  Additional data on Chinook salmon and bull trout populations will be collected and reported where possible.  The Asotin Creek assessment project implements reasonable and prudent alternative (RPA) 180 for population status monitoring (i.e., abundance, trend, distribution, and variation) and reviews status changes over time, as required by the 2000 Federal Columbia River Power System (FCRPS) Biological Opinion (Bi-Op).

Objective 1:  Estimate escapement of wild and hatchery steelhead and Chinook salmon into the Asotin Creek watershed, above George Creek.

Objective 2:  Estimate spawner abundance and adults per redd.

Objective 3:  Document juvenile steelhead life history patterns, survival rates and smolt production in the Asotin Creek watershed, above George Creek.

Objective 4: Genetics sampling.

Location of Project:  Asotin Creek and its tributaries, above George Creek, located above road kilometer 4.9, in Asotin County, Washington.
