Contract Description:
During FY 2018 PNNL will continue to collect temperature and water surface elevation data in chum salmon spawning habitat within the Ives Island area. These data will be collected at 3 locations in the greater Ives Island area.  The locations include a site north of Ives Island, East of the Island, and one location within lower Hamilton Creek.  These additional monitoring locations will be used in 2018 to determine how water level fluctuations due to Bonneville Dam operations affect water surface levels and potential chum salmon redd dewatering in the Ives Island and Hamilton Creek areas.   Temperature and water level sensors will be placed inside the piezometers to record the temperatures and water surface elevations at the site. Data from one of the new locations (the one north of Ives Island) will be made available by connecting the sensors to a cellular modem at the surface using a tethered buoy that will remain floating.  The primary purpose of the monitoring effort is to collect water surface elevation data that can be related to flow management at Bonneville Dam.  Monitoring will occur from October 2017 through May 2018. The surface buoy will remain at the field site from September 2017 through April 2018, when it will be removed.  These data will allow BPA to establish the relationship between Bonneville Dam operations and river depths near important chum salmon spawning habitat in the vicinity of Ives Island.  The water temperature and surface elevation data will be compiled in tables and provided to BPA electronically.  Results will be shared with the region as requested by BPA, including attendance at Technical Management Team meetings if requested.
