BACKGROUND
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is working closely with the Lower Columbia River Estuary Partnership (LCREP) to implement BPA project 2003-007-00.  The LCREP is in year 3 of implementing this project.  The USGS has been a subcontractor under the LCREP contract for the last 2 years (September 1, 2003 to August 31, 2005).  In cooperation with LCREP, beginning in FY06 USGS will be contracting directly with BPA to complete a part of the work outlined under project 2003-007-00.
USGS is contracted to complete the compilation of bathymetry data for the Lower Columbia River and Estuary (LCRE) and produce a report and GIS layers explaining the bathymetry.

Environmental compliance approval for this contract is covered under project 2003-007-00.  No further environmental compliance is needed.  This project is one of three contracts under project 2003-007-00.  This contract is for 11 months only.


HABITAT MONITORING:
Habitat monitoring objectives for this year include:
1. Revision of the ecosystem classification system and habitat monitoring metrics through the incorporation of LiDAR, bathymetric, and field collected data
2. Produce a report detailing the bathymetry of the Lower Columbia River and Estuary (LCRE)
3. Identify one additional reach for field sampling in the LCRE to characterize habitat variability using revised habitat monitoring metrics
4. Update the Lower Columbia River Estuary Habitat Monitoring Plan with the results obtained during Year 2
5.  USGS is contracted to compile all of the fixed station and seasonal water quality data from USGS and the salmonid sampling information from NOAA into a report.
