Contract Title:  GRANDE RONDE BASIN ENDEMIC SPRING CHINOOK SUPPLEMENTATION
Performance/Budget Period: January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2006

Contract Background Section:

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (Department), Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR), and Nez Perce Tribe (NPT) are working together under the Northeast Oregon Hatcheries Project (NEOH) to restore Grande Ronde, and Imnaha spring Chinook salmon.  The Department's recent NEOH efforts have focused on planning and implementation of the Grande Ronde Basin Endemic Spring Chinook Supplementation Program (GRBESCSP) to support recovery of these populations as directed by the National Marine Fisheries Service currently known as NOAA Fisheries.  The GRBESCSP incorporates a number of components including setting aside the Wenaha and Minam basins as natural production reserves, supplementing Lostine, Catherine Creek and upper Grande Ronde chinook populations using captive and conventional hatchery broodstock techniques, and testing the potential to naturalize a hatchery stock to restore spring chinook to Lookingglass Creek.

The purpose of this contract is to integrate Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) trapping and acclimation sites on Catherine Creek, Lostine River, and Upper Grande Ronde with the Lower Snake River Compensation Plan (LSRCP) program utilizing Lookingglass Hatchery as the primary rearing facility.  BPA has constructed an adult holding and spawning structure at Lookingglass Hatchery to assist with this expanded program.  These integrated efforts focus on holding and spawning adults, rearing juveniles, transportation, hatchery maintenance, fish health, and monitoring natural production (redd counts) for Catherine Creek, Lostine River, and Upper Grande Ronde stocks.

PROJECT LOCATIONS

This project is primarily located in the Grande Ronde sub-basin consisting of Lookingglass Hatchery and three acclimation and adult collection facilities on Upper Grande Ronde, Catherine Creek, and Lostine River.
