Background - Contract Description:

The Cle Elum Supplementation and Research Facility (CESRF) and associated three acclimation sites have a capacity to produce 810,000 spring Chinook smolts that can be segregated into experimental rearing treatments from the eyed egg stage through release.  In 2000, the hatchery added an experimental spawning channel for evaluating differences in reproductive success and associated behaviors of hatchery and wild fish.  Beginning in 2002 (Brood Year 02) some returning adults that were of hatchery origin were brought into the facility to create a domesticated line (HxH).   The hatchery line will be used to monitor the effects of domestication.  Hatchery origin line juveniles will occupy two of the eighteen raceways at the CESRF.  The Clark Flat acclimation site was designated to rear and release the two HxH raceways.   This year the complex will be raising juveniles from Brood Year 2006 on two different dry diets to see which is the best suited feed for the facility.  EWOS and Bio-Oregon will be fed to starting at ponding and continuing until release in the spring of 2008.  Adaptive management will be applied if at anytime during feed trials it is observed that one of the feed produces poor quality fish.  This BPA funded project was designed to test supplementation of spring Chinook in the Upper Yakima Basin.  The monitoring and evaluation of the supplementation is conducted by a rigorous marking and tagging program conducted on all juvenile salmon.

During this contract period from May 1, 2007 to April 30, 2008 milestones and description of work covers tasks completed and or started for Brood Years 07, 06, and 05.  Work activity for the 07 broodstock covers adult holding, spawning, incubation and a brief portion of early rearing prior to the end of the contract period.  Progeny from Brood Year 06 covers rearing of juveniles at CESRF and transfer to the acclimation sites.  The 05 brood will have four months (January 2008 through April of 2008) of off site rearing at the acclimation sites when the contract expires.  Acclimation and release of Brood Year 05 will occur during this contract period.

The work elements for this project fall into 5 different Objectives:
