Contract Description:
This project was initiated on July 1, 1984 under the BPA contract and allows for initial landowner contacts, agreement development, project design, budgeting, and implementation for anadromous fish habitat improvement on privately owned lands within the John Day Basin.  

The purpose of the John Day Fish Habitat Enhancement Program is to enhance production of indigenous wild stocks of spring chinook and summer steelhead within the sub basin through habitat protection, enhancement and fish passage improvements.

In work period 3-1-2012 thru 2-29-2013 the fish habitat program will construct approximately 44.0 miles of riparian protection fence, 405 acres and 25.75 miles of creeks protected, coordination with 5 landowners (Rattray, Campbell, Bruce Hollow LLC, Tribal/BLM Earl Pryor, Wilson, and Herb Jones). The actual number of stream miles protected is probably higher, do to sinuosity and ground truthing this summer will correct any missed judgments.   Construction will include approximately 8.60 miles of riparian fence on Thirtymile Creek/ Rattray property tributary to the Lower John Day River, 8.90 miles riparian fence on Thirtymile Creek/Campbell property tributary to the Lower John Day River, 15.00 miles of riparian fence on Bruce Hollow LLC property on Rock Creek tributary of the Lower John Day River, 8.00 miles riparian fence on Hay Creek/Tribal/BLM and Pryor property tributary of the Lower John Day River,  1.50 miles on Thirtymile Creek/ Wilson property tributary of the  Lower John Day River and 2.0 miles of riparian fence on Herb Jones property on Mountain Creek.  Install one offsite gravity spring development on Thirtymile Creek Campbell property. There will be approximately 45 gates and 25 watergaps constructed on the Five project sites.

The Herb Jones project materials are already purchased with funds provided by the CTWSRO in 2011.

One additional site on Beech Creek/Meredith Property will involve installation of 35 instream wood structures, reconnecting the floodplain in a 800 feet section of the stream, and installing 5 artificial beaver dams on 1.5 miles of stream.  This is a collaborative project between USFWS, BOR, CTWSIRO, GSWCD, and ODFW.
