Contracted funds will be used by the  CTWSRO Branch of Natural Resources,  Hood River Production Program to:

Conduct monitoring and evaluation of the existing spring Chinook salmon and winter steelhead re-introduction / supplementation programs. Activities include estimating adult spring Chinook returns (harvest and escapement); determining  hatchery smolt out migration timing, duration and residualism. 5,000 fish from each hatchery release group will be fitted with PIT tags.  Spring Chinook spawning locations, timing and success will be monitored. Juvenile distribution surveys will be conducted to document recolonization of the basin.  Run size predictions, harvest recommendations and tribal harvest monitoring will be implemented during FY 13.

Water quality monitoring in Rogers Creek and water temperature monitoring throughout the Hood River basin will continue.

The comparative hatchery spring Chinook release group evaluation will be completed and year 2 of an winter steelhead residualism investigation will be implemented.  NOAA fisheries staff will be contracted by BPA to complete data analysis and issue a final report for the 3 year smolt physiology study. Results from this investigation will assist with determination of long term spring Chinook smolt production strategy beginning with BY 13 spring Chinook reared at Parkdale Fish Hatchery.

The HRPP will  re-construct, maintain and operate a  PIT station near the mouth of the Hood River. The results will be used to adjust estimates of returning HOR and NOR adult spring Chinook salmon and winter steelhead.  PIT station will be installed within the Moving Falls fish ladder. A tagging trailer will be constructed  to house PIT tag application.

Assistance will be provided to ODFW Hood River M&E project 198805304 to determine the adult salmon and steelhead trapping efficiency of the East Fork Dee Mill trap. .
