Contract Description:
The goal of the Grande Ronde Basin Spring Chinook Salmon Captive Broodstock Program is to prevent extinction of the spring Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha populations in Catherine Creek, Upper Grande Ronde River and Lostine River, Oregon.  This will provide a future basis to reverse the decline in stock abundance of Grande Ronde River Chinook salmon and ensure a high probability of population persistence well into the future, once the causes of basin wide population declines have been addressed.  A coincident goal is to maintain the genetic diversity of indigenous artificially propagated Chinook salmon populations and that of wild Chinook salmon populations in the Grande Ronde Basin.  The Catherine Creek and Lostine River programs will have come to an end with the 2010 spawn, because we met our goal of a consistent return of 150 adults spawning in nature.  A Conventional Hatchery Program will take over for supplementing these populations.  The Upper Grande Ronde River population has not yet achieved this goal and the Captive Broodstock program continued through the 2008 brood year.  The 2009 brood year is the first of a Safety Net Program for the Upper Grande Ronde River, which will be similar to the Captive Broodstock Program, but less intensively monitored.  The final spawn for the Captive Broodstock Program will occur in September and October 2013.  At that time, all remaining Captive Broodstock fish (BY 2008 and earlier) will be killed.  This spawn season will mark the end of data collection for the Program and funding for the Bonneville Hatchery and Fish Health portions of the Program.  Some genetics and disease laboratory work will continue, as well as data analysis and report writing, through FY 2015.
