This project was initiated on July 1, 1984 and allows for initial landowner contacts, agreement development, project design, budgeting, and implementation for anadromous fish habitat improvement on privately owned lands within the John Day Basin.  

The purpose of the John Day Fish Habitat Enhancement Program is to enhance production of indigenous wild stocks of spring chinook and summer steelhead within the subbasin through habitat protection, enhancement and fish passage improvements.

Under this contract we coordinate with 8 landowners (USFS Umatilla, Ecotrust, USFS Malheur, Mund, Antone, Brown/Stafford, Lavelle Holmes, Neal, and Pryor properties) and construct approximately 27.3 miles of riparian protection fence to protect 1865 acres and 16.00 miles of stream.   Construction will include approximately 45 gates and 15 watergaps at the sites identified below:
• 5.5 miles of riparian fence on Hinton Creek, a tributary to the North Fork John Day River (USFS Umatilla)
• 4.0 miles of riparian fence on Desolation Creek, , a tributary of the North Fork John Day River (Ecotrust property)
• 2.0 miles riparian fence on Lemon Creek,, a tributary of the South Fork John Day River(USFS Malheur)
• 5.5 miles riparian fence on the MFJDR (Mund property).
• 1.3 miles riparian fence on Pine Hollow Creek  a tributary of Rock/Mountain Creek's a tributary to Lower John Day River (Antone property)
• 1.0 miles on Badger Creek a tributary to Lower John Day River (Stafford/Brown property).
•              1.0 miles on Middle Fork John Day River/Lavelle Holmes property.
•              1.0 miles on Long Creek/Neal property (Over site and Maintenance of this project.
•               6.0 miles on Ten Mile Creek/ Pryor property,  Will use all OWEB funds for Labor costs,  BPA funds purchased the materials in the 2016 budget.
