Project Summary

Project 2023-006-00 - Cultural and Educational Anadromous Fish Trap and Haul
Project Number:
2023-006-00
Title:
Cultural and Educational Anadromous Fish Trap and Haul
Summary:
For years, Spokane Tribal Fisheries has performed cultural and educational releases of Chinook salmon to the Tribe’s waters. Ranging from harvest opportunities to volitional juvenile releases, each of these events have provided opportunities to engage tribal citizens and the regional public. Previous releases have been financially supported largely by internal dollars and by our partners. This project is seeking financial support to alleviate this financial burden, continue these releases while also expanding outreach efforts and education programs.
Staff time required to perform these releases is significant. Extensive planning and coordination are required not just internally, but with our partners in the Basin. Compliance and permitting, although cumbersome, are necessary to ensure these releases do not conflict with existing program goals of our partners nor interfere with fisheries management activities from our partner Tribes and agencies.
As technical staff complete compliance processes and resolve transport logistics, a Communications and Outreach Specialist will be hired to increase engagement with Tribal citizens and the broader public. This position will coordinate the events associated with these releases; helping develop messaging, securing facilities, extending invitations, and coordinating media relations. Additionally, this position will lead the development and implementation of educational programs as directed by the Tribe. Educational programs are expected to focus on topics such as tribal history, ancestral practices, and salmon ecology. As the programs become established they will be expanded to engage the larger community to the degree and extent possible.
