Contract Description:
Asotin Creek Wildlife Area Operation and Maintenance.  Contract provides funding for operation of Schlee and Bickford acquisitions.  Past accomplishments include weed control performed in major riparian areas along with associated uplands, boundary stock fence maintenance and reconstruction, installation of informational kiosks and public parking improvements, modernization of the water supply system on the Smoothing Iron Parcel, completion of a rare plant survey, installation of gallinaceous guzzlers on both units, and maintenance of access roads and trails.  Planned enhancements include restoring riparian areas and conversion of agricultural fields into native grass habitat.  Restoration of riparian areas includes continued weed control measures, establishment of woody vegetation in riparian areas, and maintenance of boundary stock fence to prevent damage from trespass livestock.  Agricultural field restoration will be performed in conjunction with agricultural farming activities being carried out by sharecroppers.  The sharecropper on Smoothing Iron Ridge will convert non-native smooth brome fields to cultivated wheat fields for a period of time yet to be determined that will sufficiently remove residual smooth brome plants.  WDFW will work with the sharecropper to seed native grass to the fields - the idea being that raising wheat on the site for a certain period of time will provide an ideal seedbed for native grass seeding.  Since the Smoothing Iron site is a relatively arid area in late summer and fall, continued development of water sources for wildlife and use by domestic livestock will continue.  Livestock grazing used as tool to improve habitat for upland wildlife is planned for the smoothing iron unit as part of WDFW's pilot grazing program.  Water sources developed/improved as described in the SOW compliment this goal as does continued maintenance  of the improved water system at the buildings located on Smoothing Iron Ridge.
