Contract Description:
The purpose of this contract is to develop a detailed study plan to guide future research assessing the effects of a low intensity electric array on the rate of movement and migratory behavior of adult salmonids (Oncorhynchus spp.) and Pacific lamprey (Lampetra tridentata) in the Upstream Migrant Transport (UMT) channel at Bonneville Dam.  Development of this study plan constitutes Phase 1 of the UMT research.  A draft study plan will be reviewed by relevant agencies and revisions made to produce a final document.  The study plan will direct the conduct of work to be done in the spring of 2010 (UMT, Phase 2).  Specifically, our objectives for Phase 1 of this work include:

Objective 1. Review the scientific literature on the physiological and behavioral responses of migratory fish to low intensity electrical fields.

Objective 2. Obtain information from personnel at Smith-Root, Inc. on design and electrical conditions of the electric array proposed for deployment in the UMT.

Objective 3.  Draft a version of the study plan for review by relevant agencies. Revise accordingly.

Objective 4.  Produce a final version of the study plan to guide the research slated for the spring and summer, 2010.

Collectively, the results of the UMT study will be examined when making management decisions about whether to install electrical barriers in the lower Columbia River to minimize predation on upstream migrating salmonids by marine pinnipeds.
