Contract Description:
This contract covers monitoring of key elements of spring Chinook habitat as an indicator of potential improvements in biologic productivity owing to habitat restoration projects conducted in the upper Grande Ronde and Catherine Creeks.  Each watershed supports a separate population of spring Chinook that comprises a portion of the Grande Ronde major population group.

Year 5  (FY2013) of this project has the following major elements:

a)  Continue development and refinement of the plan to monitor and evaluate restoration actions in the Upper Grande Ronde basin through interaction with the CHaMP regional planning staff.  CRITFC has submitted many suggestions for improvement in the CHaMP monitoring protocol and expects to assist in its further refinement.  Also, plan for addition of new monitoring elements such as streambank stability, riparian vegetation analysis, intragravel dissolved oxygen, and fine sediment infiltration. Incorporate new monitoring elements or refinements into existing CRITFC-specific protocol.

b)  Collect baseline data on water temperature, streamflows at various stage heights, streambed substrate composition (surface and subsurface), macroinvertebrate community composition in riffles, salmonid density, and non-salmonid presence/absence. Collect data on habitat characteristics using the CHaMP protocol, and enter these data to the CHaMP database cloud for storage.

c)  Validate the utility of the water temperature model developed from LIDAR and FLIR data. Develop the sediment model from literature values. Develop a model of low flows for key watersheds within the Upper Grande Ronde and Catherine Creek drainages. Develop maps of current vegetation and potential natural vegetation in riparian habitat throughout the mainstem and major tributary zones used by spring chinook currently and historically.

d)  Continue development of the framework for a predictive model of spring Chinook productivity, incorporating a water temperature model that integrates riparian canopy cover in the entire stream network for spawning habitat, plus condition for other key habitat variables (spawning gravel composition, streamflows, large woody debris abundance, pool availability, food availability).
