Contract Description:
This contract will continue a feasibility project, which began with Fish Passage Center funding in 2006 and was implemented in 2009 using MOA funding, to assess whether video technology can be used to reduce smolt handling in the regions smolt monitoring program.  In 2009, this MOA project installed a window and box adjacent to the Bonneville Dam fish passage channel just upstream of the separator at the juvenile fish facility. Inside the box was a video camera while lighting with lighting provided from above.   In both 2009 and 2010 we tested and modified the system and expect testing and evaluation to continue in 2011.  In 2011 the project will be expanded to include a McNary component where we will install a video box where selected juvenile fall Chinook we previously PIT tagged at the Hanford Reach  will be recorded.  From the video imates, we will attempt to measure the length of these fish, as well as determining the condition, and compare this to that at the time of tagging.
